Anti-ageing drugs are coming!

According to an article I Just read in New Scientist anti ageing drugs could be with us in a few years: https://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=MARpj&m=m9vqc8ZSU6icE4Y&b=3D72wj5ONwO1TuIyfGFQTA If you don't have access to New Scientist online to read the full article - I'll summarise below including some surprising related info!
  • The aim of longevity science now is not to prolong life but make sure we have a higher quality of life as we age. It used to be all about extending the years we lived at all costs - now it's about making sure our 60's and beyond are as healthy as possible.
  • In a few weeks an anti aging "pill" will be launched. It will be launched as a supplement (not an approved drug) - so it doesn't have the rigorous testing associated with pharmaceuticals and can't make wild claims about health benefits. It's likely to not do anything as there are no tests on humans and could possibly damage the whole anti-aging industry if it turns out to cause illness or reduce your life expectancy!
  • The most promising anti aging drugs based on initial clinical trials are "senolytics". These target worn out cells (senescent cells) that build up within our aging bodies and destroys them. Most of the issues we face with aging are caused by the build up of these aging cells that accumulate causing tissue damage and "inflammaging" (aging caused by inflammation). Most of the age related diseases like cancer, osteoarthritis, Type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's etc are thought to be caused by the build up of worn out cells within our bodies.
  • Interestingly enough - intermittent fasting is also attributed in the article to killing off the worn out cells targeted by the Senolytic drugs. The article even suggests it as a safer alternative (in the interim) before full clinical trials show the drugs are safe!
  • Exercise also appears to have the same effect (I would argue that High Intensity Interval Training is likely the most potent form)!
  • The last safe "hack" mentioned in the article is to consume the Japanese fermented soya bean dish called "Natto". This contains high levels of a "Spermidine" which has been shown to restore mitochondrial function (the powerhouse of our cells) in studies carried out with older mice. Whether this is transferrable to humans remains under debate but it can't hurt to add Natto to your diet if you dare (it's meant to be an acquired taste!).
If you want my opinion - I wouldn't be taking any anti-aging drugs or supplements until proper clinical trials had taken place and a few years of human usage could be studied! I personally believe your better off sticking to intermittent fasting by skipping breakfast and not eating after dinner. If you combine this with 2 bouts of high intensity interval training and possibly consider integrating Natto into your diet - I believe you will be well on your way to living a healthy life into your twilight years.
