Skipping Breakfast is OK!
When I told my brothers and sisters last year that I had started skipping breakfast daily they were horrified. Mum had always said to us that "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day". One of my brothers also mentioned that my metabolism would slow and that I would end up pigging out the rest of the day and putting on weight. At the time I never had any strong scientific arguments to counter the criticism that I would put on weight. Sure there is stacks of evidence in scientific literature on the health benefits of intermittent fasting (skipping a meal and eating in a condensed time period) - like improved focus, allowing your body to heal, repair, and recycle cell waste, and possible prevention of Alzheimer's etc. The other day I stumbled upon this article in the Independent newspaper: http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=CV_1u&m=l1MSBLIif6icE4Y&b=fOhm.5WpYe6HHgYGAvJ_TQ The article attacks the long held belief that if you eat breakfast you have a better chance of being slimmer long term. The long held idea is that those that eat a wholesome breakfast will snack less during the day. Well this turns out to have little evidence in science! The article "...also challenges studies that suggest skipping breakfast can disrupt the body's internal clock and lead to weight gain..." Researchers at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia examined 13 studies and found those that skipped breakfast weighed on average 0.44kg lighter than those that ate breakfast. They even found that (on average) those that ate breakfast consumed 260 calories per day more than those that didn't. So the idea that breakfast skippers make up for it by snacking and eating more later in the day doesn't ring true. So if you are hesitant about trying intermittent fasting by skipping breakfast and eating later in the day - there is no reason why you should be.
